18th Century Antique American Forged Iron Coiled Snake Ex Voto Folk Art
Item History & Price
All hand wrought, this charming little snake dates circa 1770.
Small iron serpents such as this were kept at hearth mantles and around homes with the primitive belief that they contained the ability to ward of evils spirits. Several articles have been published online documenting sim...ilar examples being unearthed in Virginia and the Carolinas; the practice being a regional southern tradition.
As you can see the representation of the snake is clearly represented with the subtle decoration placed into the eye markings of the head, nice coiled design.
There is some rust and pitting to the piece from centuries of age, still overall a solid example.
This superb piece of Early American Folk Art is offered for a period of one week and sold without reserve.
