GUARANTEED!) ♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫ Since Crazy Horsefirst came to public attention as the backing band for Neil Young in concertand on his albums Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and After the Gold Rush, itmakes sense to expect that the band on its own would play something similar tothe hard guitar rock and country-rock heard on those albums, albeit withoutYoung's distinctively quirky singing and songwriting, and that is what onehears to a large extent on the debut album Crazy Horse. (Although this is theirfirst recording under that name, core members Danny Whitten, Billy Talbot, andRalph Molina have appeared previously on record as part of the doo wop groupDanny & the Memories and the rock band the Rockets.) But there is moregoing on than that. Also joining in, as singers and songwriters as well assidemen, are veteran arranger/producer Jack Nitzsche and guitarist NilsLofgren, while Ry Cooder adds slide guitar to a number of tracks. The result isa varied group of songs that range in style from rock and country to blues andfolk. The overall quality of those songs is quite high, starting with Nitzscheand Russ Titelman's "Gone Dead Train, " previously heard being sung byRandy Newman on the soundtrack to Performance. (Nitzsche and Titelman alsocontribute the pop-ish "Carolay.") The country hoedown "Dance, Dance, Dance" is a good Young cast-off, while the driving "BeggarsDay" and "Nobody" were penned by Lofgren. These contributionsserve as the supporting material for Whitten's songs, however, as his fivenumbers are among the album's best, whether he's rocking out on the ominous"Downtown" (which appears to be about scoring dope) or sadly crooningthe heartbreaking ballad "I Don't Want to Talk About It." (Afterbeing revived by Rod Stewart on Atlantic Crossing in 1975, the song was a chartsingle for him and went on to become a minor standard with covers by RitaCoolidge, Everything But the Girl, and Ian Matthews, among others.) Crazy Horsemade the case for Whitten as a major talent and for the band as a strong actapart from Young. Alas, this was sufficientfor the band to record the greatest of all Crazy Horse albums, this eponymous1971 album, which includes the rockin' "Gone Dead Train", and "Idon't want to talk about it" one of the greatest ballads of the decadent70's and Crazy Horse's signature tune, later made (in)famous by Rod Stewart'ssaccharine, manilowized version. A few light abrasions (probably just sleevescuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appearfairly insignificant relative to theoverall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting.For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws orimperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines andsparkles almost like new. (b) The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve. (c) The record is apparently pressed on a RELATIVELY thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOTa thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type), vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.
