This auction is for a stunning and large example of a crinoid fossil of the species Pentacrinites fossilis from the world famous Jurassic Coast beach of Charmouth, Dorset UK.The fossil measures 210 mm (8.3 inches) across which is very large for this fossil type. The fossil consists of multiple individual animals, with exposed detail in the stems with attachment cirri, and heads with crowns of arms and pinnules. The level of detail in the preservation is very good and the animals h...ave a nice three-dimensional depth to them. The cirri are especially well-preserved and detailed. It is preserved in limestone with a thin layer of pyrite on the surface giving it a nice dark metallic shine. The reverse side of this fossil has been backed with a water-proof plaster to replace the original rock the crinoid was in, and cracks have been filled and consolidated to make it stable. This is normal practice with these delicate fossils. These crinoids are very sought after and not easy to find these days. Crinoids with heads preserved are hard to find, and pieces of this size and quality are rarely offered for sale.Crinoids (also known as "sea lilies") are not plants, but animals that are closely related to star fish and sea urchins. They are still found alive today in oceans around the world. Around 196 million years old (Sinemurian, Early Jurassic), this fossil would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
