Subaru Part Number: 85012AC510
Up for sale is a fully functional gauge cluster from a 1996 Subaru Legacy wagon, w/ 2.2L (EJ22E) & 5 speed manual transmission. I purchased the entire car as a parts car (needed the engine) and this is one of the items I pulled from the car before sending it to scrap (was rotted beyond repair, well into rear strut towers).
What makes this cluster interesting is the rare 140 MPH speedometer. I had intended to use it in my '99 Legacy project car, but to my dismay I found the harness connectors for the cluster between the 1996 & 1999 model years were not identical. I do not know the exact year this changed, but given my experience I would say this cluster should work in any Legacy or Legacy Outback from 1995 to 1997 or 1998, as Subaru began the changeover from Phase I production to Phase II production starting in 1999 (even though '99 Legacies are still considered P1, while '99 Imprezas are P2).
Again, as I mentioned previously, this is only an educated guess, and it is your responsibility to determine whether this item is compatible with your vehicle. There are plenty of resources out there in the Subaru community who should be able to give you the answers to your questions, such as Subaru dealership Parts Departments, Independent Subaru repair shops, Catalogs, Factory Service Manuals, etc.
The condition of the item:The cluster is in excellent shape for being 23 years old. All mounting tabs are present and solid, with no cracking. There are a couple of small scratches on the bottom of the window of the cluster, although these can be polished out.
Gauge cluster is equipped with white needles, 6000 RPM tachometer redline, 140 MPH speedometer, and the odometer reads 190, 829 miles.
I cannot say for certain that all the various lightbulbs are functioning, as I only briefly drove the car once during the daytime before removing the engine and other parts—I can verify that the sweep on all the gauges is functional and smooth, however. I would check all the various lightbulbs for continuity & replace as necessary, prior to installation.
This would also be an excellent time to convert from incandescent to LED backlighting—a common, easy, inexpensive, and worthwhile modification for these cars, which is simple as finding the correct LED counterpart of the stock bulb type (information on this is readily available on Google), and installing them in place of the incandescent bulbs. No soldering or electrical modification is required. LEDs are polarized, however, so you'll need to make sure you have them installed in the correct orientation—if not, they will simply not light, and then you just have to take the bulb out of the socket and flip it around.
That's about all I know—there's only so much you can say about a gauge cluster! I will be listing more Subaru parts in the near future, so check back often.
