Several are in EX condition, one or two inVG++. They all play fine and sound great. The worst is VG++ and several are EX-to EX. The Great Shakes is in EX- condition. These are allfrom my personal collection of 45s and I’m sure you’ll be happy with this groupof rare records. The Dave ClarkFive, or DC5, were an English rock band from the Tottenham area of London. Theyformed in the late 1950s and by the early 1960s were competing with other greatBritish Invasion bands to be the best of that new sound in music coming overfrom England. They made greatrock and pop hit records, and were second to the Beatles in popularity withAmericans before the rise of Herman’s Hermits and the Rolling Stones. Between 1964 and1966, the DC5 racked up 15 consecutive top 40 U.S. hit singles, more than anyother act except The Beatles. The band generated 30 hit singles before its runended in 1970 and has sold 100 million records worldwide. The DC5 also had someof the era's catchiest pop hits. They hit #1 inearly 1964 with "Glad All Over", which knocked the Beatles' "IWant to Hold Your Hand" off the top of the UK Singles Chart. The band wasClark on drums and backing vocals, Rick Huxley on bass, Lenny Davidson on leadguitar, Denis Payton on saxophone (and harmonica and second guitar), and MikeSmith on keyboards. Mike was the lead singer and co-wrote many of the top hits. The band had an odd arrangement with an out front lead drummer and saxophonewhen most British invasion bands were guitar led. This led to a gritty punchysound which dominated many of their hit singles. The Dave ClarkFive had their own unique sound due to their Sax and drum-forwardinstrumentation and some pioneering studio work by Dave and Adrian Kerridge, his studio engineer. Their stage showwas famous for its production, lighting and theatrics, drawing large crowdsback in the day. The DC5's six sold-out U.S. tours broke house records at avariety of venues around the country. After refusing EdSullivan’s first offer to appear on his show, they made 18 total appearances onThe Ed Sullivan Show – more than any British Invasion group. Dave Clark was ashrewd businessman. He was the band’s leader and front man but also worked outdeals to be the band’s producer, manager, publisher and owner of the band’soriginal master recordings. The band members were basically employed by Dave.Essentially he owned the music and leased it to record companies such as EMI and Epic for albums unlike most bands that gave the rights to the music to the label torelease as the company saw fit. This gave him alot of power over rivals and record companies in the 1960s but also led to thebands demise in 1970. Dave Clark decided to quit while he was ahead after the1970 tour. The band wasgreat and had many hit songs in the 60s but basically ‘disappeared’ after 1970.The combination of the stress of touring, Clark’s business actions and thepsychedelic trend in pop music was the final straw for the band. TheSax/Keyboard power pop of the DC5 didn’t fit with the new psych flower powerbands of late 60s London and they disbanded in 1970 despite having had threesingles on the UK chart that year, two of which reached the Top Ten. Other 60s bandscontinued their fame and popularity by releasing compilations and re-issues andallowing their music to be used for film, commercials and other purposes, butClark refused to do so. Since he heldrights to the band’s recordings, Clark resisted re-issuing them or repackagingthem as many British Invasion bands did. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Herman’s Hermits, The Kinks, The Animals and the Yardbirds have all benefittedfrom extensive reissue programs, but not so the Dave Clark Five. Clark felt thatby withholding the music, its value would increase and demand would bestronger. All it did was take the band out of the public’s eye and eventually, as newer bands came along, people forgot all about one of the best bands of theearly 1960s. The Dave ClarkFive had 12 Top 40 hits in the UK between 1964 and 1967, and 17 records in theTop 40 of the US Billboard chart. Most of that material is no longer in printand hard to find. The band also released a film, ‘Having a Wild Weekend’(directed by John Boorman) in 1965. It too remains hard to find. If you’re a vinylcollector, think about the last time you saw ANY DC5 records at a show or in ashop. They are scarce as hen’s teeth. Clark refused torelease any DC5 music for many years, holding out for huge royalties. Between1978 and 1993, 15 years, none of their music was available to be purchased inany commercial format. He didn’t allow streaming services to have access to hismusic either, so you don’t hear any DC5 on Spotify, etc.Clark also made adeal to purchase the rights to the BBC music show ‘Ready Steady Go!’ which hebriefly leased to Disney but that deal fell thru and the great vintage rock, pop and soul TV footage from that show is also not commercially available anymore. Clark finallygave in a little and in 1993, a CD ‘Glad All Over Again’ was released by EMI inBritain. In 2008, a 28-track Hits compilation was released by Universal Musicin the UK. Other than that, the vast majority of the DC5 catalog remainsunreleased and unheard to this day. That’s why these 45s are cool, rare and funto have in your collection. As a collector, it’s great to hear these hit singles again after all these years. They containgreat music that was only available a short time and then kept from the publicfor many years. The songs still sound fresh and great today, but due to Clark’sactions, nobody knows of them today and they don’t get the accolades theydeserve. The band didfinally get some attention and approval when they were inducted into the Rockand Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. Due to the factthat so little vinyl is out there on the DC5, these records are quite rare andwould make a great addition to any collection. I’m sure you’llbe more than happy with these vintage rare records. As Clark didn’tlicense his music often, the Great Shakes Promo is rather rare. He must haveliked his milkshakes! I’m retired anddownsizing and letting go some gems from nearly 50 years of record collecting.Check out the many other fantastic 45s and 33s on my page! Shipping cost forALL of them total, within the lower 48 states, is only $4.00 via USPS firstclass. I will be glad to ship international for whatever the exact cost to doso is. We can talk after the auction is over and work out the details. I do NOTgauge on my shipping charges. It costs what it costs. If you would likeinsurance, or anything faster than first class, please let me know and I canarrange it for you. I’ll work with you to make sure you’re happy! All 45s come ingeneric white paper sleeves and simple poly-bags, unless otherwise pictured. Ido try to match up proper, appropriate generic company sleeves with my 45’s andI’ll gladly include them if I have them.As mentioned, there are 6 records, one EP and 4 original Epic sleeves in this lot. All items arepackaged with sturdy cardboard mailers and filler pads. I take pride in mypackaging and shipping and pack my records as if I were sending them to myself.I refuse to use cheap flimsy packaging material when sending my records. Itreat them as if they were my own and mail them the same way. All records havebeen cleaned and played by me. I visually inspect all records under brightlight, personally clean them and then play them on a modern high-end turntableto get a true picture of condition. I'm a 0ne-man operation, this is a hobby, not my job. I do this for fun. I do this because I love music, love collectingvinyl and want others to share in that same experience. I take my timelistening, researching, grading, listing and packaging. I will NOT sell anyrecord that I personally would not want in my collection. I’ve been told byother vinyl collecting friends that I under-grade the condition of my records.I see no harm in that. If that VG+ record comes and it’s nicer that youthought, great! We’ve all been burned by that EX- record purchase only to getit and it looks like it was cleaned with sandpaper and played with a rustynail. My goal is to avoid that ever happening to me or you ever again. Mygrading is fair and honest and I will ALWAYS refund you for anything you’re nothappy with.
