This is a delightful antique carved Black Forest Music Box with spaces for jewelry or small items. It is made of walnut and hand carved on the top and sides. There is a working lock with a key but the key is not original . Inside is a working Swiss music box mechanism which plays two tunes. There is a red velvet lining inside which we had made because it was unlined. (Linings are easily removable if a new owner prefers the original wood interior.)&nbs...p; The box has floral carvings on top that appear to be lilies and edleweiss, French and Swiss national flowers. The song titles, printed on a label on the underneath, are faded but appear to be written in German. They are: Bei Uns in Barnerland and Vo Luzern uf Weggis. (We listened to the tunes carefully but neither was familiar to any of us.) The box measures 9.5 inches long, 5.5 inches wide, and 3.25 inches high. It weighs 1 pound, 12 ounces.
Our antiques expert placed the box being constructed around 1900 give or take a few years. It is in very, very good condition but does have a slight restoration on the left side of the lid where a chip was repaired. There is also very slight warping on the lid but it still latches securely with a working lock. The carving is all without flaw. In our searches we were unable to find any boxes similar to this one.
