The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics
The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics [1] - a state that existed from 1922 to 1991 in Europe and Asia. The USSR occupied almost 1/6 of the Earth's habitable land [2] and was the largest country in the world by area. Established on the territory, which in 1917 held the Russian empire ...without Finland, the Kingdom of Poland and some other areas (lands of Kars, Turkey now), but with Eastern Galicia (September 1939), Transcarpathia, part of Prussia (from June 1945 .), Northern Bukovina (June 1940), South Sakhalin and the Kuriles.

Under the Constitution of 1977, the Soviet Union was hailed as one multi-national [3] and the socialist [4] state.

After the Second World War, the Soviet Union had land borders with Afghanistan, Hungary, Iran, China, North Korea (9 September 1948), Mongolia, Norway, Poland, Romania, Turkey, Finland, Czechoslovakia and the sea with the U.S., Sweden and Japan.

USSR was established December 30, 1922 by combining the RSFSR, the Ukrainian SSR and Byelorussian SSR ZSFSR.

Consisted of the Soviet republics (in different years from 4 to 16), the Constitution is a sovereign state [5] Each Union Republic retained the right to withdraw from the Union. [6] The Federal Republic was entitled to enter into relations with foreign states, conclude treaties with them and exchange diplomatic and consular representatives, to participate in international organizations. [7] Among the 50 founding countries of the UN, along with the Soviet Union were two of his Soviet republics: the Byelorussian SSR and the Ukrainian SSR.

The structure of the republic consists of Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (ASSR), territories, autonomous regions (AR) and offline (until 1977 - National) District.

After the Second World War, the Soviet Union, along with the United States was a superpower. [8] The Soviet Union dominated the world socialist system, and was a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

The collapse of the Soviet Union was characterized by a sharp confrontation between the central government and the Union of the newly elected authorities in the field (the Supreme Council, the President of the Union republics). In 1989-1990, all the republican Supreme Soviet adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty, some of them - the Declaration of Independence. March 17, 1991 in 9 of the 15 republics of the USSR All-Union held a referendum on the preservation of the USSR, for which two thirds of citizens voted in favor of maintaining an updated union. But federal authorities have failed to stabilize the situation. For a failed coup coup followed official recognition of independence of the Baltic republics. After the All-Ukrainian referendum on independence, which most of the population voted for independence of Ukraine, the preservation of the USSR as a state formation was practically impossible [citation needed 281 days], as stated in the Agreement on the establishment of the Commonwealth of Independent States, signed on December 8, 1991 the heads of the three Allied republics - Yeltsin of the RSFSR (Russian Federation), Kravchuk of the USSR (Ukraine) and Shushkevich of the Byelorussian SSR (Belarus). [9] Officially, the Soviet Union ceased to exist December 26, 1991. In late 1991, the Russian Federation was recognized successor to the USSR in international legal relations [10] and took his place in the Security Council.
