The Barclay was built in 1926 as part of Grand Central Terminal’s urban design plan with, "a fashionable, yet residential atmosphere." The hotel quickly became pop...ular among the New York Social Register set most notably Ernest Hemingway, who made the Barclay his temporary residence as he finished the final revisions for For Whom the Bell Tolls.
The parcel of land on Lexington Avenue between 48th and 49th street was owned by the Vanderbilt family and leased by millionaire developers to build the hotel. It's not one of the most famous hotels in the city, but it is among the most fondly regarded. The hotel was designed by Cross and Cross in neo-Federal, American Colonial style. They also designed the Tiffany Building on 5th Avenue.
Tidbit: A large birdcage was installed in 1945 in the lobby filled with various songbirds which complimented the string music played daily on the terrace. It became a favorite attraction of guests. After it closed for its most recent renovation the InterContinental Barclay hotel opened its doors once again in 2016.NOTE FROM SELLER: Our mission is to scout out fun and interesting things to bring to our fellow collectors, by going to estate and house sales, obscure auctions and flea markets in search of items that will excite and delight those in pursuit of treasures of all kinds.
