Artist Biography:Shel Starkman:Shel: Does key art for movie studios for past several decades was born in 1932 - the year that FDR defeated Herbert Hoover - great similarity to the transition today from Bush to Obama has worked for Warner Bros. and William Morris Agency dating back to the 60's - has been working in the movie industry since he was in his 20's Shel is now 80 years old and suffered a massive stroke about a year ago. He is paralyzed on on side, confined to a wheel chair, but going through daily physical therapy and hopefully on the road to recovery.  Graduated in Graphic Design from UCLA.  This was first time that Shel did a political piece Native of Los Angeles who always loved motion pictures and got into that business Interrupted by a couple of years in the army - mainly spent in Washigton DC and worked for a poster store that was connected with the Pentagon.  Shel started working independently in advertising for the motion picture industry after he left the Army. Shel is very much from the old school of cut and paste era of design.  My design interests and abilities are all based on what I've developed over many years in the cut and paste school.  "Shel - "I was very impressed with Obama when he spoke at the Convention in 2004."In school, at UCLA, and also in the Army, I was very in to political cartoons. I contributed a few pieces to the Washington Star when I was back in Washington DC during the Eisenhower Administration.   I left that behind to go into motion picture advertising design.  But political editorial cartooning has always remained in my blood.  I think when this Obama idea began to formulate for me - questions like what is the meaning of Obama. This was more than just a portrait of Obama.  It was a feeling that he was really intertwined in the word 'Hope.' Just like FDR led us out of the Depression in the 30's,  I felt that the profile of Obama was that he could lead us out of our current mess - he is our Hope.
