Description:1789 George Washington Indian Peace Medal w/Letter of Authenticity, VERY RARE!You are bidding on a VERY RARE 1789 silver GeorgeWashington Indian Peace Medal.The medal has a plain edge with a top-center holefor suspension. The obverse bears anunsigned facing bust of Washington within a central circle surrounded by thelegend: * GEORGE WASHINGTON, THE FATHER OF OUR COUNTRY * 1789. The reverse bears a wreath laid over claspedhangs above 1789 and crossed peace pipes.... The legend reads: ****** FRIENDSHIP ****** THE PIPE OF PEACE.ThisNOT a reproduction!This is an original authentic George WashingtonIndian Peace Medal dated 1789 and struck in circa 1904. The piece was struck inwhite metal at the U.S. Mint in circa 1904 in a size of 76mm. These were madeby the Mint when it became embarrassingly clear that there were no roundWashington Indian Peace medals available to complete the entire set. The dieswere cut early in the past century and the first striking was in silver and ayellow bronze with the later striking being in a lighter bronze finish withlathe finishing lines on their edge. Early silver strikes, such as thisexample, are quite rare!A nearly exact example of the George WashingtonPeace Medal was sold at the 10/17/2006 sale in New York by Stack’s (now Stack’sBowers Galleries) for $1, 500. These medals done in solid silver areincreasingly scarce with very few known to trade on the open market. An examplestuck in Bronze sold at the Early American History Auctions 8/29/2004 sale for$2, 000.Provenance: This medal comes with a letter ofauthentication from the Smithsonian Institution dated March 7, 1911. The letterexplains some of the history of the George Washington Peace Medal and verifiesthat this medal was indeed one of these.The George Washington Indian Peace Medal:Indian peace medalsrefer to ovular or circular medals awarded to tribal leaders throughoutcolonial America and early United States history, primarily made of silver orbrass and ranging in diameter from about one to six inches.Medals of this typewere given by the U.S. Government to the Indian tribes represented in theTreaty of Fort Harrmar, Ohio, in 1789 by which the Indians concerned gave uptheir rights to the land which now comprises the State of Ohio.Medals were oftenperforated and worn suspended around the neck of the recipient. Controversyremains surrounding the use and impact of peace medals in furthering diplomaticrelationships between Native Americans and the federal government. Many Indianpeace medals today are archived in museums, libraries, and cultural institutions.Condition:Some minor scuffing and scarring is evident aswell as patina one might expect for a piece of this age, but it is still inEXCELLENT antique condition.
