Up for auction is a remarkable piece of Americana. The C.G. Conn company is one of the most important companies in the world of musical instrument manufacturing. The company would lead the industry in innovation and quality up into around the early 1970s, when transitions and change forever changed the landscape of musical ...instrument manufacturing in the world.
The instrument you are looking at here is truly a rare instrument. The Conn 22A Flugelhorn bears a Cornet model number, but is in fact a flugelhorn, and was the only fluglehorn made by Conn at the time. Along with the Serial Number stamped on the 2nd valve casing is also the word 'Patented'. Conn was certainly proud of this instrument, suggesting this was the best flugelhorn in the world! It certainly is a unique instrument, and although they are quite rare, those who have had the opportunity to play on them, quite like the uniqueness of the instrument. It does have a sweet mello tone, and is very flexible.
The instrument has a .458" bore, and wears a 6" bell. The instrument appears to be of all yellow brass construction. The bell has the typical 'Art Deco' Conn engraving that is expected from their top of the line professional instruments. You'll also notice the elegant bell bow guard. This is supposed to provide more 'body' to the sound and center to the pitch. You'll find this on other notable instruments such as the French made Couesnon, and the old Calicchio Flugelhorns. The bracing is also the attractive bracing you'll find on the high end Conn horns of the day.
It's remarkable to think that this instrument was originally built by craftsman just as the United States was entering World War II. Many US soldiers left their factory jobs to fight in the war, and so production drastically dropped. This instrument wasn't around for many years. It is thought to have been produced between 1940-1952. This certainly explains why it is as rare as it is, considering war time manufacturing would have been incredibly limited for band instruments as the C.G. Conn factory shifted focus to the wartime effort making things like Naval instruments, and other things for the military.
The instrument being auctioned here comes with the original case! The horn is in pretty nice condition, and it has been professionally cleaned. All of the slides are free and work well. The valves are very smooth and fast. The valves are bottom sprung valves and are nickel plated pistons. There are some very minor dings here and there. Nothing serious at all. It's all to be expected for a horn of its age. See the pictures for a better understanding of the cosmetics. The lacquer is original, although has patches that are worn. The instrument has never been restored before. It does take a small 'cornet' shank flugelhorn mouthpiece.
