Scottwas a young doctor when he wrote this letter in March of 1858. The letter is tohis brother-in-law, John McFarl...and (1814-1890) of Chillicothe, Ohio.  The content of the letter deals mostly withbanking, property, and taxes. There is content on the Merchants Bank andseveral family names appear.History:Joseph Thompson Scott (b. March 20th, 1833 in Lexington, Kentucky – d. January25, 1896 in New Orleans, Louisiana) was a doctor and surgeon in the ConfederateArmy during the American Civil War. He graduated from McDowell Medical Collegeand at the outbreak of the  AmericanCivil War was made a surgeon in the 1st Missouri Infantry CSA. He served on thestaff of General Daniel Marsh Frost (1823-1900), but was captured during theCamp Jackson Affair (1861). After being exchanged, he returned to theConfederate cause, taking part in the Battle of Pea Ridge (1862) and laterunder the command of Gen. Sterling Price (1809-1867) taking part in Battles ofCorinth and Iuka (1862). He was then promoted to Chief Medical Director in thedivision under Gen. Earl Van Dorn (1820-1863). In 1863, Dr. Scott was detailedto the Confederate War Department Medical Board for the examination of officersin the trans-Mississippi Department. He surrendered with Gen. Richard Taylor'scommand near Washington, Arkansas in 1865. After the war, Dr. Scott set up amedical practice in New Orleans where he served as a member of the Board ofAdministrators of the New Orleans Charity Hospital. He was the son of Dr.Joseph Scott (1781–1843) and Lucy Caroline Webb Scott (1799–1868), and was thehusband of Isidora Churchill Dean Scott (1836–1924).JohnMcFarland (b. 1814 in Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio - d. July or August 1890in Lexington, Kentucky) was a land developer and investor. He was the son ofWilliam McFarland (1768-1832) and Margaret Ferguson (1779-1832). He was marriedto Mary Epps Scott (1821-1885), who was the sister of Dr. Joseph Thompson Scott(1833-1896). Note 1 - The McFarland name is sometimes spelled MacFarland andMacFarlane in sources. Note 2 - Some sources have different middle initials ofW. or E. Note 3 - The family connection between McFarland and the Scott familywas through Mary Epps Scott. Matthew Thompson Scott, Jr. was her cousin and shewas the wife of John McFarland.Condition: Theletter has folds and creases, several tiny tears, and somesoiling/discoloration.Provenance: Theletter comes from a collection of papers owned by McFarland.
