Rare antique Chinese Han Style lacquer ear cup Erbai(耳杯). Notes for Chinese buyers: 耳杯, 带握把之小杯，用于盛载热饮酒和其他特定饮品. 亦名“羽觞”，又称“羽杯”等。The cup is made of wood and covered with lacquer. The cup ispainted and etched with scroll design.The lacquer used was a poisonous sap from a Chinese native plant.The process takes hundreds of layers of the sap over a wooden or paper basewhich is then removed leaving a hard shell. An... arduous process.Erbais were drinking cups and sometime used as food containers. The shape and style came from the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220AD). MostErbais were excavated from tombs and are now properties of museum and privatecollection.This Erbai was made later than the 2nd century. Unsurehow much later. I reckon it was in the 1800s. It is in excellent condition.Similar Erbais sell for a lot of money. Some for hundreds ofthousands of dollars.
