In the mid-1960s, scattered references and photographs of US Special Forces troopers in Vietnam wearing "tiger stripe" camouflage uniforms began to appear in American newspapers and magazines. The exotic pattern captured the public's imagination, and came to symbolize the elite unconventional Green Berets of the Vietnam War. In reality, tiger stripe was a family of patterns, a vast array that remained unchronicled for years, until Sergeant Richard Denis Johnson took on the task of ...identifying and categorizing the numerous variations in his classic work "Tiger Patterns". The first two editions of the book were self-printed, after which the work was presented to Schiffer, who published the current version in 1999.
