Reverse: “William Simes & Co. – Dealers In – Teas, Wines & -Groceries – No. 1 Peirce S – Buildings – Portsmouth - ...; N.H.”Comments: This HardTimes token is in very nice original condition. The fields are nice, with someold scratches, and the obverse has a small gouge just below “ER” of Bookseller.There is some rub on the high points due to normal handling and storage. It hasnot been cleaned and has nice even chocolate brown color.According to Alan Scott Fisher’s website: NathanielMarch was born in Portsmouth on June 14, 1807. He became a junior partner inthe firm of Childs & March, the successor to Childs & Sparhawk. Childsleft the firm soon thereafter, and business was then conducted as NathanielMarch & Co. until about 1839. After that time the business was conductedsimply in his personal name, Nathaniel March. He died July 9, 1846, after whichthe trade was continued by Samuel A. Badger. WilliamSimes was born in Portsmouth on April 9, 1806. He entered business in 1828. Atdifferent times Thomas E. Call and Henry F. Gerrish were partners. His businesswas sold in 1860 to Moulton & Blaisdell, who continued the trade for manydecades thereafter. In 1861 and 1862 William Simes was elected mayor ofPortsmouth. A third nomination was subsequently declined. The token, issuedjointly by March and Simes, is believed to have been struck by Robinsons Jones& Co. of Attleboro, Mass. This Nathaniel March andWilliam Simes token will make a great addition to your Hard Times tokencollection.
