This darling silver miniature table was made in China during the late 19th or early 20th century. The table stands on four legs with pierced, swirling decoration running beneath the rim of the table. The bottom of each leg has been engraved with straight-line patterns.
The table has been marked to the underside with HC and Chinese character marks. HC is the mark of Hung Chong, a silver manu...facturer with its own large silver workshop, based in Shanghai. Towards the end of the 19th century, they opened a retail store in Nanking Road, trading in silver and other luxury goods. They were in business from around 1830 to 1925.
In the early 20th century, Shanghai was a booming city with a dynamic commercial centre and a fast-growing population. It was a cosmopolitan city, sometimes called ‘The Paris of the East’, with a large European community and a newly affluent Chinese middle class who were ‘modern’ and sophisticated individuals favouring innovative and streamlined designs which broke with tradition and looked towards the future. This high quality, understated and robust service, is a product of the restraint and simplicity which typified that early 20th-century style and a backlash to the overly ornate silver of the 19th century.
