The United States entered WWII when Japanese war planes attacked the United States navel base on the Hawaiian island of Oahu named pearl harbour, Sunday, December 7, 1941. In the days following pearl harbour, the United States instantly mobilized. On December 11, 1941 Germany and Italy declared war on the United States. American soldiers served in both the European and Pacific campaigns. On may 8, 1945 Germany surrendered unconditionally to allied forces. August 14th, 1945 Japan surrendered following the bombing of Hiroshima on August 6th, and Nagasaki on August, 9th. Following the end of the war, American soldiers returned home. 405, 399 mostly young Americans never returned, 670, 846 Americans came home wounded and countless others returned home emotionally scarred.
