Accucraft D&RGW Bumble Bee Yellow Combine Car 214
Item History & Price
This is 1:20.3 scale, plastic body construction. Minimum radius is 48 inches. This is a large and impressive car - I originally populated it with figures (they show up great in the large windows!) but I have removed them for sale. Also when I was running these I put magnets beneath the end platform so that Preiser figures with a corresponding magnet could be posed on the ...platform. On this coach the magnets are no longer under the platform.
If you are familiar with these cars, as manufactured by Accucraft/AMS, these are very heavy, especially with the electric wipers rubbing on the wheels. The wipers are intact, I have just bent them out of contact with the wheels for less rolling resistance. I also disconnected the plug to the lights on the inside of the coach, which can easily be plugged in again. I never used the lights because the live steam track at the musuem where I run is not electrified.
Comes in the original box and foam insert. The box shows a lot of wear from storage and being strapped together to move them. We used velcro straps on the foam box and clear plastic cover to keep them clean and protected and transport these cars to and from the garden railroad layout in at the Colorado RR Museum in Golden, Colorado. There are still pieces of the velcro on the top plastic and foam insert side-this turned out to be a good solution to keep things from blowing away in a strong wind. We also made and used ribbon straps to remove and replace the coach into the foam insert because it fits very snugly. One tab end of the box is worn and fraying and the plastic window is in the box but the glue has dried out and it no longer is attached, at some point it was bent but is there in the box for any protection it can provide.
Again, these are large and impressive cars - and they look great, especially behind a substantial locomotive (I pulled mine with my live steam Accucraft K28). You will enjoy this lightly and gently used coach.
From the manufacturer: Accucraft’s D&RGW passenger cars were originally built by the Jackson Sharp company in the early 1880’s. The D&RG rebuilt them over the years with larger windows, and other improvements on an as needed basis. In the 1920’s the coaches went through the car shops again to have more improvements made. This included having the bodies and platforms lowered, under-frame reinforced, and extension side bearings installed. Accucraft’s models are of the later rebuilt cars. The C&S and RGS all acquired these cars over the years, and the D&RG, and the D&RGW rebuilt these cars so many times that today it can be hard to tell how many changes were done. If you would like to see a very nice restoration of these coaches visit the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado.
