When you think of Lionel Standard Gauge Trains - this is the set that comes to mind. This is Set No. 396E the "Blue Comet". It consists of the famed 400E Steam Locomotive, with its 400T Tender. The set pulls (3) Lionel standard gauge passenger cars - the No. 420 Pullman "Faye", the No. 421 Pullman "Westphal", and the No. 422 Observation "Tempel". I wish I knew about the history of this set - but I don't, so I will detail what I see, and offer insight through the many pictures. Overall, this is a complete set, and mostly in excellent condition. However, there are some discrepancies, that I will point out. The Engine has a different look/color on the cab roof, and section right in front of cab roof, from the rest of the piece. This could be a result of sun fading, a repaint on that top section, or it has been cleaned, and the front has not been cleaned. I took a little polish to the front, and the color did come up a little, but overall it has early wear/fading as you can see in the pictures. What is nice, is that it has it original frame, and it looks free from warpage. Also, the boiler front is original. Original BILD-A-LOCO motor and wheels. When tested the Engine ran in forward and reverse. The Tender appears to be a darker color. This is correct for a late postwar Blue Comet, and this would be from that period. It is in very good condition. The Passengers Cars overall look really nice. The 420 and 421 are a close match in color, where the 422 Observation has a little darker roof. The 420 "Faye" has the harder-to-find dark blue vestibules. Overall in looks great. Minor wear and some light strands of oxidation on the roof. Clean interior and wheels and trucks. The 421 "Westphal" is excellent with only a few nicks to the paint. Looks nice and clean. The 422 "Temple" Observation shows some minor wear on the sides and also has some oxidation streaks starting to show on the roof. Overall a nice set, not to be missed. Please ask any questions, and look at the pictures carefully. Buyer pays shipping (Insurance is included in the shipping and handling fees for items over $300).
