This "Tian-tsui" 點翠 hair pin, with a raised centerpiece of coral, was procured from the private collection of a prestigious scholar and author of Chinese culture. (Other items from this fine collection have been obtained by museums and serious collectors alike.)
A charming piece of Chinese Qing Dynasty history, with extraordinary provenance, this hair pin dates from the mid to late 1800's. The Kingfisher was a prized bird due to its brightly colored turquoise feather...s. The technique, referred to as tian-tsui, translates to "dotting with kingfishers", and was used for thousands of years.
It is in very good condition but has age appropriate patina: the metal pin is slightly bent. A small amount of feathers have worn away; please see photos. The feathers are still luminous and bright.
The ornament itself measures 1 3/4" across and is approximately 3" high. The two-prong pin itself measures 4" in length.
