Original Description:
   1906-08 Carlisle & Finch #4 Locomotive + Cars #13-#13B-#11-#47-#50-#47 & #3 Mining Loco + Track

Condition and Description: The #4 Locomotive is approx. 12" long  x  6" high to top of bell  x  approx 4" wide to the cylinders…the tender is 7.5" long to the end of the drawbar  x  3 ¾”  high to top of the tender  x  3 5/16" wide…the locomotive has incorrect paint, (Only the smokebox and cab roof should be blac...k. the rest nickel plated-the plating is still there, just painted over) and the headlight, pilot beam, and motor spur gear are missing… NOTE – the motor has been rewound, but has a bind in the armature shaft and won’t run…the wire cylinder rods on the locomotive are also missing…the tender is missing part of the drawbar loop and the bottom part of the trucks and the wheels, but is otherwise in good shape – there is some surface rust on the inside of the tender.
The #13 Passenger car (1903-1906) is all brass with iron wheels on wood trucks, with bumper style couplers – “Electric Railway” is embossed on both sides – this car is 12” long, 5” high, and 3 ½” inches wide – this car is in good shape, but the roof corners are bent down slightly, and the clerestory has come loose at one end - this brass car had been lacquered to prevent tarnish, but the finish has streaked over time, and the brass has oxidized in places.

The #13B Baggage car is similar to #13 but tin with paper overlay – it is marked “Baggage Express“ – it has opening doors and bumper couplers – it measures 12 “ long, 5” high, 3 1/2” wide; the paper overlay is in fair/poor condition, and one complete section is missing, as is one door  and one wheel.

The #11 Gondola was blue, with bumper type couplers, and measures 10” long, 3” wide, and 2 ½” high; it has 131 PRR 131 embossed on sides, with metal trucks and stamped brass wheels…this car is  in fair to poor condition – the sides are  badly bent, and the metal base is creased and slightly twisted – the paint is almost completely gone, and there is some surface rust; one of the couplers has come loose on one end.

The #47 Hopper – the doors on the bottom work by windlass – it is tin painted orange and marked “B&O” – it measures 10” long, 3” wide, and 4” high…the paint is badly scratched – the chain is  missing from the windlass and the hinge is bad on one door.

The #50 Flat car is greenish-yellow painted tin, and the sides are embossed “171” – this car is 10” long, 3” wide, and 2” high, with bumper type couplers – it is in good condition, but is missing 4 wheels and is badly scratched.

The #46 Caboose is tin with a paper overlay – it is marked “L.S. & M.S.R.Y “ and “8681” -  it has bumper type couplers and measures  10” long, 3” wide, and 5 ½” high – the paper overlay in fair/poor condition; the roof is loose on one side, and bent on the ends, and one roof support has come loose from the vestibule, which is also badly bent.

The #3 Mining locomotive is missing the shell – it has 12 spoke wheels and bumper type couplers – it did run, but needs a thorough cleaning and the forward-reverse lever adjusted in order to run again – the axle bearings and drive rods have play due to wear.

The #6 wood based 90 degree crossing for strip track is in good shape, but needs repair, as some of the track sections are missing, and the connecting bridges need to be re-soldered.

Strip track (same as the metal banding used on shipping crates) and wood ties and 4 connecting blocks – the original length is unknown.

Tubular track with wood ties, maker unknown – 8 curved, 4 straight – each piece is 15” long (makes a 40” x 70” oval).

This set was made by Carlisle & Finch of Cincinnati, Ohio circa 1906-1908, and is #2 Gauge (2” rail-to-rail). The locomotive and cars are made of tin or brass, the baggage car and caboose have paper overlays on the sides. The set was given to the consignor’s father for Christmas in 1908, but was apparently used, as the said  locomotives showed some wear when he got it.. Both locomotives have wood frames, with brass motor frames and gears, with cast iron wheels; the cars also have wood frames, except for the caboose, (which has a metal base); the trucks are wood, with iron wheels and nails for axles. The #13 passenger car is brass, the other cars are tin. This set is about the same size as the German LGB, but runs on #2 gauge (2”) track. NOTE: The #4 locomotive and the cars DO NOT have rolled edges in the metal, so take care when handling them to avoid injury! The locomotives run on 10-15 Volts DC
