BEAUTIFUL RARE ANTIQUE HENRY MATTHEWS SOLID STERLINGSILVER MOUNTED EVENING BAG CHATELAINE – LOVELY ART NOUVEAU STYLE MOUNTS - NOENGRAVINGS - HIGH QUALITY – RENOWNED SILVERSMITH HENRY MATTHEWS – ENDVICTORIAN/EDWARDIAN ERA - HALLMARKED BIRMINGHAM 1901 - HIGHLY COLLECTABLE -GREAT GIFT! Thisis a beautiful, very rare example of an elegant antique solid sterling silver mountedevening bag or purse chatelaine. It haslovely Art Nouveau style decorative mounts and a black ...velvet bag with redinterior - please see the photos. Itwas crafted by the high quality maker, Henry Matthews, at the very end of theVictorian/start of the Edwardian era, hallmarked Birmingham 1901. There are no personal engravings. Whatmakes this bag so unusual and rare is the fact that it remains with its chainand chatelaine grip. The black velvetand red interior also appear to be the originals. Itis poignant to consider to whom it must have first belonged all those years ago, a stylish lady from the beginning of the 20th century! HALLMARKS: Henry Matthews;Birmingham 1901. APPROXIMATE MEASUREMENTS/WEIGHT: The bag section is about 11.5cm by 12.5cm at its highest and widestpoints. The extended chain to the end ofthe chatelaine grip is about 14.5cm. Theentire piece weighs around 70g, the silver chatelaine grip being about 20galone. CONDITION: The silver mounts are in good antiquecondition overall, especially considering they are 118 years old, just theusual signs of wear commensurate with age and use of practical antique silver. The purse opens and closes fine, the chain isfirmly attached. The black velvet hassigns of wear, particularly around the upper edges of the shoulders. It is mostly intact and has retained itscolour. The interior also has signs ofwear, a hole, tears, and it has been reattached with black thread around thetop on one side, which you can see on the photos. Again, it seems to have retained itscolour. Any dark marks, etc arereflections or bits of age related patina.
