From the back cover: In ancient Rome, three minormagistrates selected each year were given the task of turning silver intodenarii. They were responsible for minting coins of proper weight and purity. The office was unpaid but did come with a benefit. The moneyer got to choosethe design of the coins he minted. For a man looking to advertise hisqualifications for higher office, this was an incredible opportunity. Theancient Roman looked at his denarius with the same scrutiny that we give ...a $100bill. In those moments of inspection, the window of opportunity was open forthe moneyer to get his message across. The message needed to be conveyedquickly by symbols readily recognized, images well known, and inscriptions toclarify what was not apparent. The object was self-promotion. We have heresomething unprecedented: a national coinage with a personal message. With itswidely varying personal designs, the denarius represents the thoughts of the moneyer, portraying what he personally felt was important for the Roman voter to knowabout him. In this book, we attempt to recover those messages by analyzing themoneyer’s family, his own history, the symbols and insignia represented, thehistory of the events commemorated, the contemporary attitudes toward thoseevents, and the social context that encouraged certain types. The thirty-fourmoneyers covered in the time period of this book 81 BCE to 64 BCE give apicture of Roman coinage during the first years of the Sullan constitution.Thirty moneyers who minted between 63 BCE and 49 BCE were covered by the authorin an earlier book. Taken together these sixty-four moneyers complete thepicture of Roman coinage during the years of the Sullan constitution from itsbeginning until disrupted by the civil war between Pompey and Caesar.
