September 1945 - Major Gen. G. Ralph Meyer, commanding general. Antiaircraft Command, pins the Bronze Star on Lt. Col. Arthur C. Smiley, Jr., formerly assistant chief of staff, G-2, Antiaircraft Command, for meritorious service in North Africa, Sicily and Italy.
Lt. Col. Arthur C. Smiley, Jr. received the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in connection with military operations in North Africa. Sicily and Italy from November, 1942 through June, 1944. While serving as executive to the Corps antiaircraft officer, Colonel Smiley made many field inspections in combat zones and was instrumental in helping to find and correct deficiencies in AA operations. He served as executive officer of an antiaircraft artillery unit at the Anzio beachhead and provided valuable assistance in the conduit of antiaircraft defense in forward areas.
