I recently purchased these Civil War Documents from Jerry Sandusky of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. They are in very good condition and are 155 years old.
This Discharge and Pay Voucher belonged to Private Dennis J. Gilbert of Thetford, Michigan. Gilbert was born in Southwold, Elgin, Ontario in 1840. Dennis enlisted with Company F. 3rd Michigan Cavalry. He was 5'8" tall, had a dark complexion, bla...ck eyes and brown hair, and his occupation was that of a farmer. He was discharged by reason of a Surgeons Certificate of Disability in 1864.
Dennis was married and had three children when he died of inflammation of the lungs June 28, 1876. He was only 36 years of age at the time of his death. This was three days after General George Custer died at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, in Montana.
These original Civil War Documents will make a nice addition to your Civil War Collection. If you have any ties to Michigan, or the 3rd Michigan Cavalry, or even Dennis Gilbert himself they will be an extra special part of your collection. I have completed some family history information for Dennis in Ancestry. Included in the sale is a hand signed letter by me stating the provenance for these documents.
