Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:218837 | Number of Jewels: 17 Jewels |
Brand: Elgin | Material: Silver |
The swing out style case is marked "PIONEER WALTHAM AW CO. WALTHAM PAT. APR. 22. 79. COIN" inside the case. There is no weight marked, so I do not know the weight of this coin silver case. The total weight of this watch is 5 oz.
There are dents on the back and they create wavy look as you can see in the pictures. On the side of this case, there are marks someone once thoug...ht this case had a snap on bezel and tried to insert a case opener. You can see this marking in the picture. This bezel is screw on & off style and despite of the attempt markings, the thread is not damaged and it screws on & off very nicely. There are scratch marks on the pendant. The crown is worn, but there is no trouble winding and setting time. The bow is not super firm, but it is firm enough to maintain its horizontal position. I don't think this case had never been abused (except for the case opener marks), it is just an old case with a lot of histories.
The glass crystal has some light surface scratches, but it is clear. No cloudiness. There are couple of edge chips.
The dial has no hairlines, but there are edge chips around 12 o'clock and there is small surface imperfection mark right below "VII". There is a rubbing mark between 5:00 and 7:00 along the edge. This dial is not perfect, but it is an attractive dial with older style "Elgin" lettering. The hands are blue color and the hour hand has some minor rust spots, but I don't think they are bad. The hands look pretty nice.
The very attractive movement is marked "B. W. Raymond Safety Pinion 17 JEWELS ADJUSTED Elgin Ill. 7223660". There is a small & minor surface scratch between the "F" of regulator indicator and the case screw, but it is not very noticeable. I am just writing this to give you a correct information. This scratch is so minor that you may not be able to see it in the pictures. Other than this, there is no ugly surface scratches. There are rust spots on the regulator and one of the screws on barrel bridge is sunken. The jewel settings and balance screws are gorgeous rose gold color.
This watch was serviced by a professional watchmaker a years ago. Everything was completely disassembled including all cap jewel settings and barrel complete, cleaned, lubricated with 100% synthetic lubricants and adjusted. According to this serial number, this watch is from around year 1897.
Even though this watch was serviced a year ago, I am not able to offer you any future warranties on this watch because this is over 120 years old antique and any fine mechanical pieces like this watch always have some possibilities to have issues in the future even with your proper care. There is no way to prevent any issues from happening for this old timepiece. I will ship this watch by USPS Priority Mail. I use a square box smaller than Priority Mail medium flat late box and I will back well. I do not ship internationally for this item. Please feel free to ask any questions. Thank you for your interest and have a wonderful day!
