1857 $5 The Western Exchange Fire & Marine Insurance Company Obsolete Note hailing from Omaha City, Nebraska.  This highly sought Danforth, Wright & Co. (New York & Philadelphia) prized UNCIRCULATED features a vignette of the native Indians and a Low Serial # 771 stamped in BLUE !!!!! BISHOP HILL  COLONY The Western Exchange Fire and Marine Insurance Co. received its charter from the Legislature on March 16, 1855. This was during the first session of the Legislature and this was the only bank to receive a charter at that session. The charter was a permit to receive deposits and issue certificates tfor, so their notes were certificates of deposits. The signatures on the fully signed notes of the Omaha issue were Mr. Tuttle and Mr. Benton as President. This example remains unsigned.  After the failure of this bank on September 23, 1857, Mr. Johnson of Galva, Illinois, purchased the charter from Mr. Benton for a reported price of $9, 500. Mr. Johnson was an officer and a member of the Bishop Hill Colony. A new issue of notes were ordered with the following added: “Deposited by Bishop Hill Colony”, and with a date of November 2, 1857. Mr. Johnson continued to redeem the earlier issue along with his own issue until the money ran out and the bank went bust again. This Bishop Hill issue is signed by Tuttle and Johnson.  Increasing dissension among the inhabitants of the colony lead it to be called the "Bishop Hell Colony".
