This lovely Steiff bear was purchased new by myself at a toy shop in Santa Barbara. It was taken out of the box and displayed in a dust-free cabinet in a smoke-free home since bought. I have never attempted to wind it up and see it somersault.
This bear is designed to turn somersaults after winding its clock-work mechanism up by its arm. The COA shows the somersault moves that the teddy... bear makes. The bear is five-way jointed, has a coat of honey brown mohair, brown plastic eyes and a black hand-embroidered nose, mouth, and paws. It has light tan paw pads of felt. It stands about 11.5 inches (29 cm) tall.
A faithful replica of the rare clock-work 1909 Somersault Bear, This teddy bear is No. 00246 in the Limited Edition of 5, 000 pieces from 1990/91. The button/tag in ear and the certificate both indicate the edition number.
The condition is excellent, there is no wear to the mohair or the felt, and the color is a nice golden honey brown and not faded. The box is in excellent condition with no torn corners and the acrylic lid is nice and clear. The plastic lid has slight scuffing (see photos) and a couple of small crimps that do not detract from the total package in my opinion. No tears or broken corners.
