The dialBeautiful large white enamel dial, which is very clear with black Arabic numerals, split minutes around the edge of the dial with a black diamond marking at quarter hour intervals. The dial is signed ‘J. W. Benson’. (This famous English family firm of watchmakers, whose full name is ‘James William Benson, ' used to... practise watch making between 1849-1973 and produced high quality watches. Benson himself made watches for the Royal family and Queen Victoria.) In the bottom of the dial is written: “Swiss Made”. The dial has sunken second subsidiary, blued steel spade hour, minute and second hands. The dial and the hands are in excellent condition with no chip or cracks. New glass has been fitted.
The caseAn attractive solid silver plain case. The pendant is at 12 o’clock position and the hinges for the back cover, front bezel and the dust cover are at 6 o’clock. The solid silver case is hallmarked for London Jubilee 1935, with the gothic letter “U”. Inside the back cover it is numbered ‘642677’ and has the case maker’s initials ‘J.W.B.’, which stand for J W Benson. All those hallmarks, number and the maker’s initials are present inside the dust cover. The case is in very good condition, with no damage, but there are a few superficial scratches on the back and few tiny dents on the back cover (please see the photos). Hinges are in good order.
The movementBeautiful high quality gilded brass movement. It has a lever escapement wheel with ruby endstone balance wheel. The movement is signed ‘J. W. Benson, Swiss Made, 15 jewels’. The mechanical condition is excellent. The movement has been cleaned, serviced and oiled and is in excellent working order and keeps very good time. New main spring has been fitted. The watch measures 50.7 mm approx.
All in all, this is a beautiful solid silver Jubilee open face pocket watch by a very famous watchmaker. It is in very good condition and working order.
