Three page letter on long sheets, scans above truncated at bottom. My very dear Mother,
It is now more than a month since I reached this my home where I now have the satisfaction to find my household all alive & well. None of them had been seriously sick during my absence - & thro' the divine mercy they had not only been made safe but Comfortable. The dreadful scourge called yellow fever visited New Orleans during what is denominated the sickly season but was not permitted to invade our little city. Natchez is I suppose on the whole one of the healthiest towns in the world and were it not that the yellow fever does sometimes attack it it might almost be said that there is never much sickness heard of - But it is here as elsewhere people die & die they must everywhere - for where there is sin there must be death everywhere & as all have sinned, all must die no matter how healthy their Constitution may be - Still this is a most unpleasant country to me to live in, the changes of weather are great & sudden, but the duration of heat & the musketoes render it to me almost insupportable. The weather often becomes warm in Feb'y so that almost any kind of garden seeds can be planted - & the month of March is frequently a hot summer month so that when the summer opens in March the hot weather is upon us almost eight months - this might be endured better if it were not for the torture of the musquetoes - still there are many things here to make life comfortable - there is none of that dreadful snowy stormy freezing weather which in a northern climate sometimes almost takes the life of nearly every beast - the diseases here too except the yellow fever are much milder and less dangerous - Still I do not like the climate nor the country as well as I do the middle states - But the Lord has been merciful to me here and I must not, I do not, complain - I have always been surrounded with thousands of blessings altho unworthy of them all, and  amid my severest afflictions, I have reason the sing of the goodness & mercy of the Lord - My trials have been sore - the Lord saw that it was best first to take my property & then to take from my fond embrace my darling my only daughter this day year ago she lay dying & tomorrow morning at none o'clock will be one year since her soul dropped its frail tenement of clay & took its flight with eternity - With my dear daughter were buried many I may say most of my earthly hopes - I had been blessed with three children & I loved them all - but my daughter was dear to me beyond all description - Were it not that you her excellent mother it would not be in my power to convey to you any adequate idea of the excellence of my darling daughter - I have wept & moaned & prayed - my heart is broken - crushed - But why should I go then bowed down to the grave - No one who knew her doubts that my Louise has gone to a happy home - to a heavenly - She has been taken away in mercy- for O how much evil she has escaped "From sin & temptation she is forever set free"  & I doubt not that if she could at this moment speak to me from the grave she would say "Weep not for me but for yourself & the dear friends that yet remain in a world of sin & sorrow - I do not murmur but O I beg for grace that I may so live that my last end may be like that of my loved Louise - She will not return to me - & O may I but go to her - And O my dear Mother if our peace be made with God, we shall all soon be together - Whether you or I should go first we know not - I feel that I am old and have but a short time to live - you are a few years older still which of us will be called away first we know not - & surely it matters not to us we are but ready ????? ????? when the messenger calls - On the subject of this preparation I can say nothing new as to the importance - the necessity - & the MAnner - it is all to be done thro' our Lord Jesus Xst - He has had mercy on thousands & he will have mercy on us if we asked the blessed promises encourage us to ask - Jesus has himself said ' Ask & you shall receive" I w? refer you my dear Mother to my former letters - I ? earnestly pray that we may both obtain grace to live and grace to die - Earthly things with us wil soon be over & O may that heavenly land be ours " - You no doubt desire to hear from your other son - & I take pleasure in communicating all I know - It was my intention to settle him on a farm near St Louis last May but my losses of money were so severe last spring that I was unable to pay the expense of settling John on the farm as I intended & I was obliged to alter it he remained during the summer at my house near Natchez - Still I did not lose sight of the object & since my return from the North I have made every effort I cd to raise money enough to get him to the place & furnish him with provisions - farming tools  - working oxen - horses - cows - sheep - hogs & hens &c & in addition to all this he must have a good deal of furniture for lodging cooking & the like - with all of which - that is enough to make him and his wife comfortable he will be furnished - I directed John's wife to leave Manchester for St Louis by the 1st of Nov. Well as I said I have been trying to get John started so that he & his wife might arrive at St Louis at about the same time & last night about 12 o'clock he embarked on board a Steam Boat with all his goods &c - He had with him the good Gig & Chaise & harness - 1 good markey wagon - 3 good matresses some blankets bolster pillow sheets &c. - a number of pots kettles frying pans spider flatirons, candle sticks, lamps &c & the like - Bedstead chairs tables & some other articles are to be purchased in St Louis also a horse & a cow to give milk at the [seal torn] & some fowls to lay eggs - some flour & wheat . In short I have provided every thing I could to make them reasonably comfortable. There is a ???? farm of about 150 acres of land - a house large enough for them & tight & warm & in the spring he will have farming tools & emough. I have also sent with him a good black woman & fine black boy & shall shortly pu on a stout black man - This is the start I give them & if they can not go ahead & make a living for themselves & let me have some butter flour & meat &c after a year or two I think it will be a poor story. There is on the farm a fine thrifty orchard of nearly 100 apple trees - another of 30 or 40 peach trees some plumbs - quinces - pears & cherries - & every acre of the land good enough to produce 50 bushels of corn without manure - such is the farm & it lies 6 miles from the city where everything he can raise will sell for cash - He has been sober & steady ever since he has been a my house & I hope he will continue so - & then he will do well enough - I am writing in great haste as I have got to go by the first boat one hundred and fifty miles into the country on business to be gone about one week. This letter leaves Mrs Tyler myself in pretty good health & she joins me in love to you and sister & all lthe family - do some of you write to me - my kind regards to Purnel(?) & her husband - ???? - I did not return by way of Illinois & so did not see Cousin Harry(?)
