[American Songs]1838 Song Manuscript from Private Pinkney, U.S. Navy. Interesting 8vo volume, a commonplace book, full red leather, containing songs (without musical notation), poems and sayings in the fine hand of one Private Henry Pinkney, the last entry being dated 1838. His name inscribed on the front cover and the first page, followed by 43 pages, each inscribed with a poem or Song ("Song / published to an air by Mercandante / Sept. 1837, " "Song / published to an air by Auber, "... "The Midnight Serenade / Published to an air by Chas. Pinkney" etc.). The rear portion of the volume includes a further 15 pages of entries, including a few songs and many sayings and quotations. The inner rear board is inscribed in another hand "A scrap book of poor Pinkney's -." The United States Naval Historical Center records that a Commander Henry Pinkney drowned at Tuspan, Mexico on 15 May, 1848.
Boards heavily rubbed, some of the leaves and gatherings separated or separating from the binding, the pages generally clean and very good.
