1968 CESSNA 177 CARDINAL, 2875TT, 990SMOH, POWERFLOW, NICE, CHEAP!

THE CARDINAL WAS DESIGNED AS A REPLACEMENT FOR THE (AT THE TIME) 11 YEAR OLD 172, WHICH ITSELF WAS ONLY A NOSEWHEEL MODIFIED VERSION OF THE POSTWAR 170 SERIES.

CESSNA’S DESIGN ENGINEERS AND PRODUCT PEOPLE WANTED A CLEAN SHEET DESIGN, USING THE NEW STRUTLESS 210 STYLE WING AND A HOST OF AIRFRAME AND INTERIOR-IMPROVEMENTS.

THEY SUCCEEDED ON ALMOST ALL COUNTS!

THE CARDINAL SITS LOWER, MAKING E...NTRY AND EXIT EASIER.

THE LACK OF LIFT STRUTS ALSO HELPS KEEP THE AREA OPEN.

THE BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT THOUGH COMES FROM THE 30% LONGER DOOR, WHICH OPENS THE WHOLE SIDE OF THE CABIN UP ON BOTH SIDES, SO BACK SEAT ENTRY IS EVEN MORE IMPROVED THAN THE FRONT SEATS!

USING THE 210’S LARGER BAGGAGE DOOR GIVES EVEN BETTER ACCESS TO THE GENEROUS BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT.

THE WINDOWS, FRONT, REAR AND SIDES ARE MUCH LARGER, FLOODING THE CABIN WITH LIGHT AND MAKING THE OUTSIDE WORLD EASIER TO SEE!

I APOLOGIZE ABOUT THE EXUBERANT PRAISE, BUT I REALLY LIKE THE CARDINAL’S LOOK AND FEEL.

BUT THERE ARE TWO ISSUES WITH THE CARDINAL THAT PLAGUED IT FROM THE BEGINNING;

NOT ENOUGH POWER AND THAT ALL FLYING TAIL!

THE DESIGNERS MADE A NICE AIRPLANE, SLEEKER AND BETTER THAN THE 172 BY FAR, BUT ALSO A BIT HEAVIER, SO THE 0-320 LYCOMING, WHICH IS 150 H.P., WASN’T QUITE ENOUGH TO GIVE THE HEAVIER AIRPLANE GOOD TAKEOFF PERFORMANCE AND CLIMB RATE.

THEY SOLVED THE PROBLEM THE NEXT YEAR, BY CHANGING THE ENGINE TO THE (AGAIN) HEAVIER 0-360, 180 H.P., BUT SO MANY CARDINALS WERE PRODUCED IN 1968 THAT WHEN MOST PILOTS THINK ABOUT THE CARDINAL, THEY THINK ABOUT THE UNDERPOWERED 1968!

THE OTHER ISSUE WAS THE FLYING TAIL, OR STABILATOR, WHICH WORKS FINE ON ALMOST EVERY METAL PIPER MADE, BUT HAD TEETHING ISSUES IN THE 1968 CARDINAL.

CESSNA DESIGNED A FIX FOR THE ‘68 TAIL, BUT AGAIN, THE STIGMA STUCK!!

THIS IS THE DREADED 1968; BUT DO NOT DESPAIR !!

THIS AIRPLANE HAS FIXES FOR BOTH ISSUES I MENTIONED!

LIKE ADDING HEADERS TO A CAR INCREASES PERFORMANCE BY BETTER EVACUATING THE EXHAUST GASSES, THE POWERFLOW EXHAUST SYSTEM, INSTALLED ON THIS AIRPLANE, ADDS 20 HORSEPOWER TO THIS ENGINE, WITHOUT ADDING WEIGHT, SO THE NET GAIN IS SIMILAR TO THE PERFORMANCE OF THE 1969!

EVERYBODY WOULD LOVE THE PERFORMANCE GAINS OF THE POWERFLOW, BUT FEW CAN STOMACH THE $4, 000 INSTALLED PRICETAG.

THIS AIRPLANE HAS IT, AND IT CHANGES THE GAME!!

AS LONG AS HE WAS THROWING MONEY AT THE ENGINE, THIS OWNER THREW MORE AT IT IN ORDER TO GET THE MOST OUT OF IT AND MONITOR IT PROPERLY!

AN EDM 700 DIGITAL ENGINE MONITOR DISPLAYS ALL 4 EGT AND CHT READINGS AT ONE TIME, FOR THE BEST DEPICTION OF WHAT YOUR ENGINE IS DOING, AND WHAT YOU ARE DOING TO IT!

THE COMPANION FS 450 FUEL SCANNER SHOWS FUEL FLOW AND TOTAL USED, AND WHEN HOOKED TO A GPS, CAN SHOW RANGE AND MILES PER GALLON, DOWN TO A 1% ACCURACY!!

THESE 2 SYSTEMS, A $2, 000 VALUE, ARE INCLUDED HERE AS WELL!

THIS AIRPLANE ALSO HAS THE TAIL MOD KIT, SO THE OTHER 1968 CARDINAL ISSUE IS FIXED AS WELL!!

THIS IS A NICE CARDINAL, AND LOOKS QUITE GOOD FROM 20 FEET, BUT THE SAME OWNER WHO WOULD SPEND $4, 000 ON THE POWER ISSUE ALSO WANTED A SUPER SHINY PAINT JOB, SO THE PAINT IS A BASE COAT/CLEAR COAT FORMULA, JUST LIKE A MODERN CAR, AND JUST LIKE SOME MODERN CARS, THE CLEARCOAT LAYER HAS FLAKED OFF IN SOME AREAS.

THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM FOR THE WAY THE AIRPLANE FLIES, IT JUST GIVES SOME AREAS A “DIRTY” LOOK.

THERE IS A MORE SERIOUS ISSUE, OF COURSE.

ON LANDING, THIS AIRPLANE WAS BLOWN SLIGHTLY OFF THE SIDE OF THE RUNWAY, AND 1 PROP BLADE CONTACTED A RUNWAY LIGHT.

YOU CAN SEE THE LEADING EDGE OF ONE BLADE HAS SEVERAL NICKS AND GOUGES. IT IS NOT BENT AND THE OTHER BLADE IS NOT TOUCHED AT ALL, BUT THE GOUGES ARE DEEP ENOUGH THAT THE PROPELLOR NEEDS REPLACING. IT IS A FIXED PITCH PROP, SO THEY ARE NOT VERY EXPENSIVE.

BUT THE RULES SAY HITTING ANYTHING WITH THE PROP THAT REQUIRES PROP REPLACEMENT ALSO CALLS FOR A PROP STRIKE INSPECTION TO THE ENGINE.

A MECHANIC CAN DO AN INSPECTION IF HE CHOOSES TO, OR THE ENGINE CAN BE REMOVED AND SENT OUT FOR TEARDOWN INSPECTION (NOT OVERHAUL).

ASK YOUR MECHANIC WHICH HE WILL REQUIRE SO YOU KNOW, BEFORE YOU BID PLEASE.

WITH ONLY 990 HOURS SINCE MAJOR OVERHAUL (2, 000 HOUR RECOMMENDED TIME BETWEEN OVERHAUL), A MAJOR OVERHAUL IS NOT REQUIRED OR EVEN RECOMMENDED HERE.

THIS AIRFRAME WAS INSPECTED WELL, TO MAKE SURE THAT NO OTHER COMPONENTS WERE DAMAGED, BUT THE ONLY THING VISIBLE IS A SMALL SCRAPE ON THE BELLY. PRESUMED TO BE FROM THE LIGHT PIECES PASSING UNDER IT.

THATS IT!

THE MAIN WHEEL PANTS WERE REMOVED TO CHECK THE GEAR LEGS AND WHEELS, NO ISSUES.

THE REAR FAIRINGS WERE REMOVED TO CHECK THE TAIL, NO ISSUES.

NO DAMAGE IS APPARENT TO THE NOSEGEAR EITHER, AND THE FIREWALL AND ENGINE MOUNT LOOK GOOD.

THE ENGINE SITS STRAIGHT INSIDE THE COWL, SO THERE IS NO APPARENT DEFORMATION THERE EITHER

BOTH WINGS, ALONG WITH THEIR FLAPS AND AILERONS, LOOK GREAT.

SO ITS THE 1PROP BLADE, PLUS INSPECTING THE ENGINE.

INSIDE, THE AIRPLANE LOOKS GOOD, WITH RED SEATS AND SIDE PANELS. I DIDN’T NOTICE AT FIRST, BECAUSE THE COLOR MATCHES, BUT THE REAR SEATS ARE ORIGINAL VINYL WHILE THE FRONT SEATING SURFACES HAVE BEEN REUPHOLSTERED IN RED CLOTH.

WHAT I DID NOTICE RIGHT AWAY IS THAT BOTH SEATS HAVE THE DESIRABLE VERTICAL ADJUST FEATURE, A HANDLE TO RAISE OR LOWER THE SEAT TO FIT YOUR HEIGHT.

A GODSEND TO SHORTER OR TALLER PILOTS OR RIGHT SEATERS!

THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LOOKS GOOD, WITH CLEAN, MODERN INSTRUMENTS INSTALLED.

I BET YOU NOTICED THERE ARE NO RADIOS INSTALLED.

BY SELLING THE AIRPLANE WITHOUT THE RADIOS, I REDUCE YOUR UPFRONT INVESTMENT, SO YOU DONT HAVE TO HAVE THE MONEY INVESTED WHILE YOU DO THE REPAIR, AND YOU NEVER HAVE TO PURCHASE WHAT YOU DON’T WANT !

TO MAKE REINSTALLATION EASY IF YOU DO WANT TO GO BACK WITH SOME OR ALL OF THE PREVIOUS EQUIPMENT, WE HAVE LEFT THE CONNECTORS WIRED FOR THE FOLLOWING:

A PS ENGINEERING 8000 AUDIO PANEL, KING KX155 NAVCOM AND A GARMIN GNS NAV/COMM/GPS/MAP. THE AIRPLANE IS ALSO STILL WIRED FOR DUAL GLIDESLOPE INDICATORS AND THE WAAS ANTENNA IS STILL INSTALLED.

SO GOING BACK WITH ANY OF THIS TYPE OF EQUIPMENT, NOW OR IN THE FUTURE, WILL BE PLUG IN, NO WIRING REQUIRED!!

UNFORTUNATELY THE TRANSPONDER, WHICH HAD RECENTLY BEEN INSTALLED, HAS BEEN REMOVED AND THE CONNECTORS CUT.

YOU WILL WANT TO INSTALL YOUR CHOICE OF ADSB CAPABLE UNIT ANYWAY, SO THIS IS A SMALL LOSS.

THE ANNUAL INSPECTION JUST RECENTLY EXPIRED SO IF YOUR PLAN IS TO REPLACE THE PROP AND FERRY THE AIRPLANE TO YOUR HOME AIRPORT, CONSIDER THE NEED FOR A FERRY PERMIT.
