Antique French Wood Box With Crest, Putti And Key

This antique chestnut wood box was found at the estate of a Francophile collector. The box has a key that works and is lined in green felt. The top of the box is decorated with a bronze crest featuring musical putti and flowers, set in a square recess and surrounded by carved accents and hobnails. The escutcheon is also very decorative. The box was obviously made by a craftsman as evidenced by the unique way the corners are joined, both the lid and sides.The box is in overall good cond...ition with the following signs of age: one of the four corner decorations is missing at the point where there is also a split in the wood. One of the back bottom corners of the box has a chip.Measurements are: 7 7/8" by 7 7/8" and 2 1/2" tall.
