This piece depicts the profile of an elegant young woman crowned with laurel leaf wreath . (Painting Daphne "The Lictenberg Nachf - Max Sinz, Dresden") ..."DAPHNE" IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY DAPHNE WAS A NYMPH AND HUNTRESS DEVOTED TO ARTEMIS GODESS OF THE HUNT. LIKE ARTEMIS, DAPHNE REFUSED TO MARRY AND SPURNED ALL ADMIRERS. WHEN APOLLO, SON OF ZEUS, PURSUED HER SHE CALLED UPON HER FATHER, THE RIVER GOD, TO HELP HER. HE TURNED HER INTO A LAUREL TREE. -- HEARTBROKEN, APOLLO MADE A WREATH FROM THE LAUREL TREE AND LAUREL BECAME APOLLO'S SACRED TREE.
