I would estimate it dates circa 1870s or 1880s.
The overall frame measures 15 inches wide x 13 1/4 inches high x 5 inches deep (38.1 cm x 33.6 cm x 12.7 cm). The carved piece measures 10 3/4 inches wide x 9 inches high x 2 1/2 inches deep (27.3 cm x 22.8 cm x 6.3 cm).
I believe this is referred to as either a diorama or tridimensional.
The scene is ...a castle with a moat and people in small boats. The castle is surrounded by a forest.
Unfortunately, a few pieces of the carving have come loose and are lying inside. When you shake it a touch, you can see these pieces, which I believe are trees from the top left corner. A few pieces of the castle have also become unattached and are scattered about.
There is writing on the bottom which I believe says: Giebiechenbein im 15 Yaar 100.
Everything about this is original. It has very bubbled and wavy glass.
It weighs just under 4 pounds (1.8 kg).
