Antique Gilt French Limoges Colander Handpainted W Violets For Berries 7x3. 5 VF
Item History & Price
Elegant, authentic antique porcelain colander made by Limoges, in France. Designed in the French Country or Provincial style to hold berries, the colander stands on three curly, shiny gold feet and has a scalloped, gilded top edge. The white porcelain surface is decorated with hand-painted violets and gold flowers, dots, and trim at the round colan...der perforations. A dusting of light cinnamon brown embedded in the glaze on the colander bottom suggests that the colander was taken to a berry patch and laid on the ground while the fruit was gathered. Notes adapted from Wikipedia: Limoges porcelain is hard-paste porcelain produced by factories in and around the city of Limoges, France beginning in the late 18th century. The name does not refer to a particular manufacturer. By about 1830 Limoges, which was close to the areas where suitable clay was found, had replaced Paris as the hub of private porcelain factories. Limoges has maintained this position to the present day.
