This truly astonishing piece dates to the late Georgian or Napoleonic Period c. 1820. I have looked at a lot of mourning mementos made of human hair before but have never seen one depicting such a light hearted scene as this. All done in blond or reddish blond hair we see a fisherman casting his line into a river or lake which is lined with the overhanging branches of trees. He and his basket and stool are surrounded by shrubbery and a rocky shore. In the distan...ce is a town with a church and a castle tower. All are created with human hair. The body of the fisherman and the distant town are all outlined in single hairs but might have a tiny bit of shaded watercolor as well. The image is framed with a gilded ring inside a ebonized molded wooden frame. Whether or not this piece was created to memorialize a beloved fisherman we will never know but somehow this scene seems to fit our age of mourning better than the usual antique scenes of people weeping over a tombstones The image itself is 3 1/8" x 2 1/4". The frame size is 5 1/4 x 4 1/2. Both picture, original glass and frame are in nice condition. Washington State buyers please add 10.1% State Sales Tax. Stock number SAY-137
