Offered here in a NO RESERVE .99 CENT start auction is a truly MAGNIFICENT early Victorian era paisley wool and silk woven kashmir shawl. This stunning piece of wearable textile art dates to between approx. 1840 to 1865 and is GIGANTIC! It measures a VERY large approx. 130 by 64 inches. (See our pictures of it spread over a table, a couch and one very tall man.)We are letting the true collectors of Victorian era textiles and vintage clothing set the price on this wonderful wearable pie...ce of Victoriana. We know true connoisseurs of this type of 19th Century textile will appreciate just how rare and precious this piece is, especially in such fantastic condition. This lovely paisley kashmiri silk and wool shawl is woven in rich, lucious colors of reds, golds, blues, corals, browns, greens, creams, etc... The center is a deep glowing crimsom framed by the intricate and ornate woven swirling paisley designs that give this type of textile pattern it's name. It is woven in an extra large size to accomodate the large bustle and voluminous crinoline skirts of the period. A shawl of this size and intricate design could take a craftsman many weeks to weave. Since it was hard to wear coats over the full skirted dress styles of the period, a warm, and of course beautiful shawl was a necessity to fashionable ladies of the day. An exotic, colorful silk and wool intricately designed paisley shawl was the feminine status symbol of its time. The condition of this piece is amazing! It has been stored away and perfectly preserved for over 170 years. The only flaw, if you can even call it that, is a barely visible small 'discoloration' about the size of a US nickel. We did not try to clean this piece since we are not experts in the preservation of textiles. This piece still retains its fringe which could be 'combed' out to make it flow more than its present tassle look. We are leaving this choice up to the new owner of this beautiful Victorian wearable textile art piece. We CAN say that this stunning paisley shawl feels warm and lush with strong but pliable woven fabric threads of warm soft wool and luminous silk. Please note there is a small linen tag on the shawl with hand written old ink. It appears to have two names on it. Collectors, here is your chance to claim a magnificent example of early Victoriana. FREE PRIORITY SHIPPING TOO!From victoriana.com :Shawls of Paisley design were in fashion for nearly 100 years, from around 1780 until the 1870’s (1). During this time millions were woven, embroidered and printed in Kashmir, Persia, India, Russia, USA and Europe, in France at Paris and Lyon, Austria in Vienna, in England at Norwich and in Scotland at Edinburgh, Glasgow and Paisley itself. It was the woven Kashmir shawls which first caught women's imagination, with European manufacturers quick to emulate by weaving or printing. Paisley produced shawls the most economically and for the longest period, the name becoming synonymous with the place of manufacture.
