Rare Museum Quality Antique American Victorian Ball and Claw Footstool made by Merklen Brothers, NYC, 1882-1897 Condition: Footstool is in very fine condition including the original burgundy velvet upholsteryThis is a rare American footstool is firmly attributed to Merklen Brothers, New York City. In business from 1882-1897, this firm is known for producing "Moorish Fretwork Furniture" often incorporating very elaborate turned elements, often spiral turned, and highly ...sculptural cast bronze decorations including their unique exaggerated ball and claw feet. Merklen Bros. had an in-house sculptor to design and produce the bronze elements used in their furniture (Ref: "Moorish Fretwork Furniture" by Paul Tucker, The Magazine Antiques, May 2005, pages 116-123).This rare museum quality antique Merklen Bros. footstool is burgundy velvet upholstered wood with ebonized prob. mahogany hardwood legs, and cast bronze feet grasping ebonized prob. mahogany hardwood balls. This foot stool retains its original covering, the underside has the same covering, and is in very fine condition.
