Antique Overseas Travel Chest Steamer Trunk Suitcase Ernst Lange Dresden Germany
Item History & Price
Antique Overseas Travel Chest Steamer Trunk SuitcaseAttributed to Ernst Lange of Dresden, Germany, a well known fine luggage maker. This example is missing its tag, but I was able to visually match the design elements to another chest in my research that had the Ernst Lange tag still attached. This one has a metal tag on one end: "mit Sperrplatten", which in German means "with locking ...plates" (a promotional tag).Various labels from the previous owner's travel remain on the trunk. The trunk is covered in canvas. It has double locking brass-finished metal latches and hardware (no key), leather handles (in above average condition), and rounded beechwood slats (wood type based on research - please judge for yourself) with formed metal corner reinforcements, and riveted metal edge banding reinforcements. The interior is paper lined and is missing its till. The lid has a functioning support to hold it upright when open. It has a musty smell; in my opinion it's mild.Dimensions: 44" wide x 23" deep x 13" highMade circa 1890-1900Condition: Consistent with age and use, with wear to the handles, canvas and interior, and scuffs and tarnish to wood and metal finishes.
