"Unmasked At Last!" Coming to the conclusion that his spider-powers are fading for good, the ailing Peter Parker realizes that today is Gwen Stacy's birthday and he hasn't been able to get her a gift. In ...a moment of desperation, he uses his fading spider-powers to steal a pearl necklace from the jewelry store but stops himself at the last moment. ---
Personally I loved this issue, there was something magical about the teaming of Johnny Romita Sr., and Jim Mooney on Spider-Man, and as the scans showcased the characters in the series, espeically the tennagers actually looked like teenagers. The cover art by John Romita Sr., alone is worth adding this classic issue to anyone's collection. As for the story by Stan Lee, a real fun read, as Peter tries to deal with the fact he thinks his powers are going away,   during this issue we discover how his genius scientific mind hadn't deduced his lose of power's reason has a rather human origin and fix. Plus, any time Stan Lee wanted Peter to figure out a way keep his secret identity secret by tricking people, it never ceased to make me smile.
This comics conditionMy copy of ASM #87 is in pretty nice shape (as showcased in the scans I took today, which was the first time this issue was out of its comic book bag in at least 30-40 years). The most noticable problem is apparently the cover and/or the entire comic book was once folded vertically in half. Looking at it, it appears whomever had it once in his hand folded it hard enough, which has left a slight crease that runs partially through several pages in the issue. Because of this, there is a minor crease near the center of the cover, from top to bottom, most noticably apparent at the top behind the "THE AMAZING (in the logo)" in the solid black ink in what looks like a white thin line. That said, the crease/fold is hardly noticable. With all that said, I'd classify it as a FN to VF+ (no the comic hasn't been graded, but please check out my positive feedback, I try to be as honest as possible). The interior pages look slightly off white, and also showcase the crease/fold on them. Just in case if your interested, it's complete copy with no coupons cut or loose or missing pages. Any questions ask.
About this comic and my history with it:One of my brothers picked this copy up of The Amazing Spider-Man #87 at a used comic book shop in late 1971. After we got it home, he put it in its own comic book bag, and added it to my family's growing Amazing Spider-man collection which, until recently was a complete set of issues 1-300.
Note: As my brothers grew up and quit reading and collecting comic books, I was 'asked' to continue the ASM collection. I was 10 or 11 at the time. But as the real comic book junkie in the family, I had no problems saying yes to the task. So it became my job to continue buying ASM's to add to the family's collection, which we all agreed would stop at # 300. I know what were we thinking. Before this 'job' occurred, while I bought pretty much a copy of every new comic book that hit the stands that I could afford with my allowance, my brothers bought the ASM issues. So until I began to buy them new around 1969 and 1970, my brothers bought every issue either new, by trades, at used comic book shops, or at conventions.  Sadly the time has come to start selling off my entire comic book collection, which includes me and my brother's 'Amazing Spider-man' comics. So my sadness is your gain. Any questions please ask. Also, please check out my other comics on auction, or query me directly if you are interested in other issues not presently listed, perhaps I have a copy of something you are looking for and we could make a deal.
Thanks, and good luck your decision.
