This pre-Civil War framed sampler is dated 1853. Some of the lighter colored stitches have faded over the years, and it is hard to make out some of the letters of the alphabet at the top, as well as the date. It was stitched on linen, and the name of the young lady who did it is hard to make out, but I can see the first name looks like Rebecca. It has a wonderful design. In the center, there are two birds perched on a bowl of cherries. I love the way the birds and cherries have r...etained their bright red color after more than a century and a half. There are flowers, birds, carousel horses, rooster and other animals surrounding the birds. Professionally framed and ready to hang, it measures approximately 12" by 18". A wonderful piece of history example of the folk art of the period.
