MID/LATE 18TH CENTURY QUOTATION SAMPLER BY NANNEY WOODHATCH AGED 11 - 1772

Mid/late 18th century linen and silk wool work sampler by Nanney Woodhatch aged 11 - 1772. This sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The linen is stitched with two rows of alphabet letters running across the top edge which are then followed by the following biblical quotations, Nanney's details and a short prayer

The first two quotations are underlined with a diamond border whilst various words in all sections have a crown beside them. There are four crowns after George III's details whilst the bottom of the linen is stitched with rows of sets of family initials with a crown at the end of the second row.The linen has overall quite dark discolouration consistent with its age, with some patches of staining. The colours of the silks are good with extensive stitch loss to the last two rows of family initials and the odd stitch elsewhere. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Nanney first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, the bottom edge of the linen is damaged and there are several small areas of damage to the field plus a larger area in the lower section. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable.Measures 8 1/4" x 19 1/2"
