This is a beautiful antique woven silk Stevengraph (ready for framing) by Neyret Freres. It shows a scene of two women in fencing class, the teacher standing next to them and their fellow pupils looking on. It is done after a work by Alonso Perez (Spanish artist, 1858-1914) and very finely made by Neyret Freres et Cie in Paris, France, around the turn of the century. This company mad...e a number of fine weavings after works of art of famous painters.
This scene of the fencing women is not your everyday subject. It was mostly boys who got fencing lessons in the 19th century.
The beauty of these stevengraphs is in the use of the silk. It changes a bit in colour depending on how it catches the light and at times has an effect like one can sometimes see in old glass negatives in which silver is used, when you move them so the light changes... A lot of different colours silk were used, for the faces for example sometimes up to twelve different colours grey! The reflection of the light is what stevengraphs are all about. It is hard to convey their charm in photographs. Once you've seen one in real life you know what I mean!Shipped with USPS Priority Mail
