Though the decades-long feud she had with sister Olivia De Havilland has shone light on Joan Fontaine’s penchant to at turns be difficult and grudge-holding, the actress was tremendously giving to her fans. Up to her death in 2014, she responded personally--at times in great detail--to individuals who wrote her asking for pictures, autographs, and reminiscences from her life in the pictures.
Among those who reached out to Fontaine and were rewarded for their efforts was William Studer, an Albert Lea, Minnesota man who passionately collected all things Joan.
Along with vintage photographs, signed books, and even personal Christmas cards, Studer also amassed a tremendous collection of clippings, correspondence with friends and colleagues of Joan Fontaine that shed light into her personality, and memorabilia.
We are thrilled to have the opportunity to offer pieces from this one-of-a-kind collection.
ITEM: You are bidding on a 1938 color original Lobby Card featuring Joan Fontaine and Billy Gilbert and Allen Lane co-stars in "Maid's Night Out" (1938), an RKO Films production of a now mostly forgotten Romantic Comedy.
Measures 14" x 11" with no odor and a nice gloss - a fresh attic find!
Joan Fontaine was still two years away from full stardom when she appeared in the B-plus comedy Maid's Night Out. Future cowboy star Allan Lane plays Bill, a millionaire's son who, to win a bet with his father (George Irving), sets out to prove that he can succeed without his family's money. While working as a milkman, Bill offers a lift to Sheila (Fontaine), whom he takes to be a housemaid. In fact, Sheila was also born into wealth, but she doesn't let Bill know that, fearful that she'll lose his love; Bill likewise keeps his actual identity a secret for the same reason. Adding to the fun is the presence of Hedda Hopper, making one of her final acting appearances before devoting herself full-time to her gossip columnist. Film buffs will also enjoy a fleeting but hilarious jibe at Hopper's number-one rival Louella Parsons.
CONDITION: Fine condition with great vivid colors some light scattered edge wear and one tear on the upper middle margin - nice gloss and no musty odor!
