WELCOMETO SALLY’S DIARIES: I’vedecided to list this diary with a bit of a mystery behind who itmight be. I have a lot of the clues but don’t have the time tofigure it out so I will leave that to the winning bidder. First offthe diary was written in 1866 and in the front there is aninscription that says, “My father’s diary when in thearmy.” Well that isn’t the case as the author’s entriesdon’t have anything to do with army life but that doesn’t mean heisn’t a Civ...il War Vet. Next, there are entries for every day of the year but some of those entriesjust list a town he is traveling to as he does a lot of travel allover the state of Pennsylvania and New York. When he does write hismore extensive entries they usually take up ½ to most of the page.So here how it lays out. From January 1st to May 26thhe has long entries. Then starting May 27th he just startsputting the name of the town he is in but there are 30 longer days ofentries until December 31st. So all in all there are 176long days of entries out of the 365 represented and the rest are justthe name of the city or another word or two. Hereare the clues I found. He mentions having an Uncle Townsend and anUncle J. J. Jolly and a Cousin Annie Jolly. His parents live inWestfield, Tioga County Pennsylvania. Also living in Westfield is hisUncle James. With all of that I found on the web Margaret Jolly(1797-1877) who married Melkiah Labar Jr. Margaret had a brother bythe name of James J. Jolly, thus the Uncle J. J. Jolly he mentions.Margaret and Melkiah had 10 children and one of those was DeborahLabar who married Uriah Townsend (her second husband). They had threechildren: Erastus P., Alva, and Pricilla. But I hit a roadblock whenI went further but I’m almost sure this is the family. I’vescanned and will include the genealogy I found. Onevery interesting entry is on August 31st, 1866 when hejust writes, “Williamsport PA., Married.” The other veryinteresting thing about our author is that he makes ink and deals inink plates, stencils, printing, etc. He travels around selling it andtrying to find investors. Ido need to tell you also that his spelling is quite poor but to methat only adds to the charm of this diary. I’ve quoted the entriesbelow just as he writes it. Here are a few of those example entries….1866“January2nd, I stade at Potter Co. PA with my brother and I have bin hunting allday and have not had very good luck only to lose my watch some wheirin the woods and it may be found in the spring when the snow goes offas we have marked the trees.” “January10th, I staid to Elkland Tioga Co. at the hotel. I have maid a call on mybrother Daniel this day. I have not seen him for several years.
