Hawaiian Koa Wood Driftwood Carving of Madame Pele by John Roberts of Hawaii This piece of Koa wood is 17 inches tall and weighs about 3 lbs. It was carved by Hawaiian artist John Roberts. The carving portrays Madam Pele, the Hawaiian Fire Goddess. Many of John Roberts' carvings were made in the 1950s -... 1970s. He was a very sought after and talented artist and carver, yet very down to earth.
The modern art world tends to dismiss as craft the kind of sculpture that harks back to an earlier time. However, John Roberts, who died at the early age of 56 (in 2002) not only kept the old skills alive but imparted life and feeling to wood, stone, and clay to a rare degree. His figure and architectural ornament carvings appear on many ecclesiastical and secular buildings, and he was also a brilliant draughtsman and an inspring teacher.
