Still in its original wood frame, the head and shoulders black and white portraitshows Princess Margaret wearing her favourite tiara, the magnificent, PoltimoreTiara, made in the 1870’s by Court Jewellers Garrard for Lord Poltimore as agift for his wife. When the Tiara came up for sale at Sotheby’s in 1959, Princess Margaret purchased it for herself for a mere £5, 500, as compared toits almost £1 million sale price in 2006following Princess Margaret’s death.Princess Margaret wore the PoltimoreTiara on her 6th May, 1960 wedding day, and often thereafter, withLord Snowden famously (or infamously) taking a photograph of Princess Margaretwearing the Poltimore Tiara while she took a bath.Princess Margaret has hand ink signedthis substantial 32.25 x 24.25 inch (81 x 61 cms) wood framed photographic portrait in themount below the 18.75 x 15.75 inch (48 x 41 cms ) black and white photograph, clearly hand signingin ink ‘Margaret 1964’.The back of the photograph has a St.Elphin’s School Badge label attached. St. Elphin’s School opened on 15th March 1844 in Warrington as agirl’s boarding school, and was dedicated to St. Elphin who according totradition founded the nearby Parish Church. In 1904, the school moved to DarleyDale.Following closure of the school, the site was acquired in 2006and developed into a luxury retirement village, the main building beingconverted into retirement flats.This listing also includes an originalblack and white photograph taken during Princess Margaret’s 1963 royal visit tothe school and shows her being accompanied by the Rt. Rev. C. R.
