This listing is for a beautiful pair of ornate engraved brass trays from the early Qajar Dynasty in Iran. The original owner of this rare pair of history purchased them when serving in Iran during the transition of WWII into the Cold War, from someone who had the plates in the family for over a hundred years. According to them, one plate depicts two Lamassu standing guard on either side of a Genie. The second plate depicts Gilgamesh and his friend Enkidu preparing to seal their fate by... killing the bull of heaven (depicted here as a Lamassu) at their feet. As ornate as the filigree carving and engraving work is on these pieces, their early age is also indicated by the crudeness, or lack of expertise in the through-cuts in the metal, considering this type of artistic metalwork only gained popularity around the start of of the Qajar Dynasty, making this one of the earliest pieces of its kind. Each handmade plate measures about 13” tall by 13” wide, and is made of brass and finished with copper. The pair is in very good condition, with minor wear considering their age. The signature under both plates is believed to be of the engraver. Please see the photos above to evaluate condition for yourself before purchasing. Please see my other listings for another set of trays from the same time period! I will combine shipping whenever possible to save you money!
