Especially when it came to the subject of genitive organs and female complaints, most of the companies were owned and operated by men, and not necessarily men with any medical background, so the female segment of society was overlooked in this field for the most part. Just the fact that women couldn't vote during this time period shows that female's needs and priorities were overlooked at this time. There were women that were instrumental in preparing commercial medicines and tonics (Lydia Pinkham, Amanda Wilson, both whose names are embossed on patent medicine bottles) for the female society and also women who were medical doctors, druggists, and pharmacists. For example, there is an antique pharmacy bottle embossed "MRS. A. L. COOK / PRESCRIPTION DRUGGIST / POCATELLO, IDAHO", and that bottle has an 1888 patent date, so during this time period more and more women were coming out of the house to work and more and more attention was being given to them and their needs. This WATKINS FEMALE TONIC bottle is one of the early products on the market that addressed these needs. The label goes on to say that it is "A Tonic to the Pelvic Organs of the Female System ... Stimulating nutrition, checking tissue waste and acting as a sedative on the pelvic and genitive organs", which probably was a welcome sight for a woman back then who was experiencing difficulty in these areas. Watkins was a household name at the time, as his bottled products were sold nationally and from door to door, and most of them that we see today contained products such as food coloring, flavoring extract, and liniment. But what else is great about this Trial Mark / WATKINS bottle, put up by Mr J. R. Watkins, Mr. household name, Mr. maker of good flavoring extracts, food coloring for cupcakes and candy, was also producing OPIUM HEROIN MORPHINE laced quack medicine products. He put out opiated liniment, heroin laced cough syrup, and morphined medicines. So who knows what was actually in this FEMALE TONIC that made it stimulating and a sedative. Also the label has a picture, a bust profile of old J. R. Watkins, comparable to the busts you see of the great Ceasers of Rome, Philosophers of Greece, Brass War Hero's of recent times, and ... J. R. Watkins. I am sure that Watkin's used the narcotic patent medicines responsibly and in good faith and believed that the ingredients would benefit the consumers who took it. It is just fun to me to think that such a wholesome maker of innocent household products of old, also had a line of medicines that were laced with such hard-core narcotics such as Opium, Heroin, and Morphine. This is a rare old bottle, there can only be so many bottles of FEMALE TONIC that still have their paper label fully intact as I would venture to say that 99.9999999999% of them did NOT survive the elements of time. To go along with that and everything else we just relayed, it is a Watkin's bottle label that we've not seen before, check it out!Terms of Sale: Our goal is 100% customer satisfaction.
